Q. IS THE CONTENT THE SAME THAT I COMPLETED DURING BASIC LICENCE TRAINING?
A. No. There are parts of Advanced Skipper that refresh some of the basics, including rules and regulations, but the greater emphasis is on the skipper actions taken to ensure safe and fun boating. These ‘human factors’ are clustered into the following areas and inform the Advanced Skipper focus: 1. Preparation. 2. Situational Awareness. 3. Sound decision making. 4. Appropriate action.
Q. AND WHAT ARE THE TOPICS COVERED?
A. Each of the scenarios in Advanced Skipper covers a number of topics. These topics include the key issues identified in national and international research conducted by maritime safety agencies, marine insurers and the boating industry. The topics also include some of the less serious, but no less frustrating parts of recreational boating. Topics include: Situational awareness; effective lookout; good judgement and decision making; pre departure planning and preparation; appropriate on-water speed; weather and waves considerations; manoeuvres in tight spaces; effective skipper/passenger communication.
Q. SO IS IT A BOATING SAFETY COURSE?
A. In part, but that’s not the whole story. In designing Advanced Skipper we took that view that by exposing recreational boaters to more challenging scenarios we would help to instil greater skipper confidence and competence when the lessons are put into practice – an outcome that is complementary to creating better boating experiences, and a safer boating community.
Q. WHAT ARE THE TECHNICAL REQUIREMENTS?
A. The Advanced Skipper course works on both Windows and Mac computers, with the two latest versions of each major browser. This includes Internet Explorer, Edge, Chrome, Firefox, and Safari. The course is also supported out of the box on most mobile devices and tablets. High-speed internet is also highly recommended.
